HKI Fireplace Quality Mark

The quality mark for modern fireplaces can be awarded to appliances that meet requirements that go beyond the currently valid emission limits in Germany. The Objective is to achieve permanently low emission rates and high efficiency values of the appliances even in practical operation and focus on the durability of the appliances and reduce real life emissions of appliances and to approximate the type test results. In addition, the manufacturing quality is checked by an annual inspection or by proof of production control and leakage rate. The quality mark is intended as a neutral assessment instrument that documents the value of modern fireplaces and is immediately recognisable to the consumer.

The harmonized European standards for solid fuel burning appliances together with national emission requirements are an important contribution both to product safety and to health, environmental and consumer protection. They define the technical requirements and emission requirements for solid fuel burning appliances.

The database informs whether a solid fuel burning appliance meets specific emission limits.

Consumers, chimney sweepers, craftsmen and other interested parties are able to obtain information from the database about the compliance of different appliances with the emissions and efficiency requirements.

The HKI as an independent, neutral and qualified body verifies and evaluates accurately the product characteristics based on the emission requirements of the type test. All manufacturers of solid fuel burning appliances have the possibility to register their appliances on the database.

The database offers a very convenient and time-saving way to look up whether a solid fuel burning appliance meets the requirements set by the following regulations:

  • BImSchV in Germany
  • Austrian regulation referred to Art 15a B-VG about the placing on the market and inspection of fireplaces.
  • Swiss clean air act
  • Danish regulation for air pollution from wood burners
  • Promotion „crédit d’impôt“ in France

When entering the product data in the database, the HKI Industry Association checks and assesses whether the requirements of the standards are being met. The manufacturer requests the entry into the HKI database and submits the necessary test reports, including the installation and operating instructions as well as the declaration of performance, to the HKI.
